Pantovčak

Zagreb (City of Zagreb county)

Coordinates (lat, lon): 45.84° 15.96° (OSM, Google Maps, Bing Maps, Mapy.cz)
Characteristics: private

This analemmatic sundial was constructed in August 2011, during the landscaping of the yard of a family house on Pantovčak in Zagreb. The remains of old raw oak beams were used to make the sundial. Thyme was planted between the wooden elements, and there is a lawn around it.

Two whole beams are laid parallel on the ground in the north-south direction. Roman numerals are engraved on them which indicate the months of the year. Columns obtained by cutting beams were used for the hour markers. They are placed vertically in the ground and marked with Arabic numbers. Due to summer and winter time, they were placed in two rows in the shape of an ellipse whose semiaxis is 250 cm. All markings were engraved in simple strokes with the tip of the chainsaw.

In addition to the columns that show the time, on both sides of the date scale there are also columns with dots that represent the moment of sunrise and sunset on a certain day of the year.

When a person stands on the beam in the place corresponding to the date and raises his hand, the shadow falls in the direction of the correct time that we read from the inner row of columns during the daylight saving time period, and from the outer row during winter.
